TAKE ACTION ON HR 1227, THE GULF COAST HURRICANE HOUSING RECOVERY ACT OF 2007!

Why is this bill so important?

If passed, this legislation will help secure temporary and long term housing for low income survivors of the storm in Louisiana.  This includes:

• Extending the FEMA temporary assistance deadline until Dec 2007
• Securing the ‘Right of Return’ for public housing residents
• Enforcing one-for-one replacement of public housing so the storms are not used as an excuse to reduce the total amount of public housing on the Coast,
• Creating 4500 project-based vouchers which can be used to create affordable rental housing for elderly, homeless and disabled

Another critical component of this bill is increased oversight of the state recovery plans. Without effective supervision, there will be tremendous difficulty in modifying these plans midstream and in convincing Congress and the public that their money is being spent responsibly.
