Why is this bill so important?
If passed, this legislation will help secure temporary and long term housing for low income survivors of the storm in Louisiana. This includes:
- Extending the FEMA temporary assistance deadline until Dec 2007
- Securing the ‘Right of Return’ for public housing residents
- Enforcing one-for-one replacement of public housing so the storms are not used as an excuse to reduce the total amount of public housing on the Coast,
Creating 4500 project-based vouchers which can be used to create affordable rental housing for elderly, homeless and disabled....

Looking to Help and Finding Friends
In 2006, the Gulf South Allied Funders (GSAF) and The Twenty-First Century Foundation (21CF) launched a partnership to ensure that financial resources get to the people and communities who need them most through 21CF’s Hurricane Katrina Recovery Fund. The guiding principle of this collaboration is that monies raised are not a substitute for responsible local, state and federal government programs which need to be held accountable.
